Sleeve Gastronomy

Sleeve gastrectomy, or gastric sleeve, is a surgical weight-loss procedure in which the stomach is reduced to about 15% of its original size, by surgical removal of a large portion of the stomach, following the major curve.

The open edges are then attached together to leave the stomach shaped more like a tube, or a sleeve, with a banana shape. The procedure permanently reduces the size of the stomach. It is performed laparoscopically and is not reversible.

Benefits of Sleeve Gastrectomy:

  • Your stomach is smaller, but you can still eat and digest most foods in smaller amounts.
  • You will produce a decreased amount of Ghrelin, the appetite-increasing hormone.
  • This is a minimally invasive laparoscopic procedure, which for many patients can mean a quicker recovery.
  • The surgery enjoys a high rate of success world wide, and patients usually reach their ideal weights.

Gastric Bypass

A common form of gastric bypass surgery is the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, designed to reduce the amount of food a person is able to eat by cutting away a part of the stomach, as well as relinking the large intestine directly to the stomach to lessen the absorption of sugars. It is a  procedure that helps patients by changing how the stomach and small intestine handle the food that is eaten to achieve and maintain weight loss goals.

After the surgery, the stomach will be smaller, and a large part of the small intestines will no longer be intact. Due to its nature, this surgery suits those who love sugary foods.

Another more recent form of the surgery, known as Mini Gastric Bypass, is technically simpler than the former type as well as reversible.

Benefits of Gastric bypass:

  • The amount of weight patients can lose after the surgery is often impressive. The weight loss leads to a reduction in the risk of obesity-associated diseases such as hypertension and heart disease. The risk of death due to obesity is also reduced after a gastric bypass operation by nearly 40%.
  • The surgery is known to cure Diabetes Mellitus Type 2 and keeps Type 1 under control.
  • The procedure suits patients suffering from ِGERD.
  • The procedure can be performed laparoscopically, which makes it easier and ensures a faster recovery period.
